But, as we elaborate below, the terms “gods” and “monsters” do not refer to phenomena that exist “out there” in the world.
Monsters, on the other hand, are generally conceived as the worst of us-the dark force that preys on others, a twisted moral authority, or a sadistic pleasure in the suffering of others. Colloquially speaking, gods are often thought to represent the best of us-the lofty ideals toward which humanity aims and the source of its ultimate salvation.
Perhaps we don’t talk about this connection because both these terms are rich with assumptions about both ourselves and the societies we live in. Pretorius toasts, “To a new world of gods and monsters!” The line has an uncanny quality to it because while we seldom acknowledge the relationship between gods and monsters, we seem to understand it intuitively.
